So This is the New Year
01.26.10 | Life
Long ago, back in… August of 2009, I posted consistently to this blog. The world was such a different place then that it’s hard to even remember how we lived. Conan O’Brien had job security, $100 bills were burned for their heat, and I was at the tail end of my recovery, trying to figure out where I wanted to go next (I may or may not have made up the $100 bill part, it was too long ago to remember). For one reason or another, obviously I stopped writing on here for a while. A lot has happened since then and even more will hopefully be happening soon, so let’s fill in the blanks and get this damn blog going again. I’m guessing that one person out there just might have checked the blog at some point. This is for you, random cat walking on somebody’s keyboard.
In case you’re wondering: why yes, yes I have had a post like this one before. I’ve had a busy year and a lot of down time that wasn’t post-worthy. Also, I’m insanely lazy from time to time on anything that isn’t of absolute importance. Anyways, back in September I was looking at getting back into the big boy world and wanted to move back to San Luis Obispo. I asked around and eventually one of my good friends decided he wanted to be roommates. We looked around, found a place, got delayed, and eventually I moved back up to SLO (I refuse to write out the entire name more than once). Almost immediately, the malaise I had grown accustomed to was replaced by excitement. I was having fun with friends and more importantly, I was on my own again. For some reason, my roommate even created a Facebook page for our living room. I’m still not sure why it was created or designated as female.
As if sensing my newfound happiness, my luck decided to crash the party. My roommate lost his job and couldn’t afford rent. The check I was waiting on to cover my rent for the next six months and pay off my debt was denied. I began applying to jobs, only to realize that even my connections couldn’t find me any work in my field. My SLO experiment failed incredibly and I was forced to move out of my place once again.
Sob story over. I had an incredibly fun time with everyone there and started to get on with my life. Since then, I’ve manned up and saved every penny I possibly could. I’ve applied to so many jobs that I BROKE MY KEYBOARD typing custom cover letters for my applications. I’ve even had a little fun on a budget. I took a trip to Mammoth for 3 days and Las Vegas for 5 days and managed to only spend $200 including my lift ticket. Among other tricks, I brought all of my own food and curbed my gambling tendencies. I spent quite a bit of time hanging around various Blackjack and Craps tables while my friends gambled and I collected free drinks. Before the trip, I was incredibly worried that I would overspend or be bored the entire time. Instead, I enjoyed Las Vegas and Mammoth on a budget for once and focused on spending more time enjoying the little things. I ran into my friend’s band Still Time during an outdoor set 400 miles from San Luis Obispo. I sat with Wade in the lion’s den at 5am watching the “sexy ladies” try to coax the drunks into paying to take them home. I cheered and screamed at Aarde and Nisse (hereafter known as Party Time and Nizzle) as they played last year’s runners up and beat one of the best teams in the World Series of Beer Pong. I’ll remember all of these a lot longer than that $50 blackjack hand I usually get angry at. These are the things that keep me moving.
So, here we are. I’ve applied to around 90 jobs, gotten interviews with a few, flown to Seattle for one, and I’m waiting to hear where life takes me next. I’m excited for the changes ahead and thank any of you who have stuck around while I wasn’t quite as happy about where things were going. Thanks to Wade, Aarde, Trisha, and anyone else who offered me places to stay. Thanks to Addie for being amazing in trying to find me a job and a place to live. Mostly, thanks to everyone for getting me out of my rut and on with life. I couldn’t be happier with where things are going and hope to follow a path much like my friend will be soon. Remember Caleb, in China the majority of people you see are not Jackie Chan. Oh and one more thing:
Rant: F- you Leno. That is all.
