Las Vegas and the World Series of Beer Pong: Part II

01.10.09  |   None

Now that Las Vegas has been thoroughly revisited, sans the 190 Octane post that is coming tomorrow, we can get down to the ultimate reason for us being there in the first place. The mecca of drinking game events. The gathering of the drunken masses. This is the World Series of Beer Pong.

The tournament was started off with the best of intentions. Josh and I were on the team Afternoon Delight and were hoping to do better than our showing two years before in the second World Series of Beer Pong. We ended up 4 and 8. Ouch. I could blame our poor showing on quality teams that we played, but honestly Josh had good games that I didn’t show up for and I had good games that Josh couldn’t make anything. It happens and I had fun playing regardless of the outcome. Hell, we only lost by two to the team that got 3rd place and everyone was chanting “MVP! MVP!” for when they finally lost. And he made seven cups in a row in the game against us! I had a blast cheering on my friends and playing some competitive beer pong.

Aarde and Nisse got what I would consider the saddest showing of all, if only for the fact that they were the closest to the playoffs of all of us. They finished 8 and 4 and ended up 130th place. The top 128 teams made playoffs. As crappy as that is, they played awesome and it’s too bad they didn’t make it. Thane and Caleb ended up an even 6 and 6 in a decent showing that included waking up and running straight into their first game of the morning. Our friends, Team Ramrod, ended up 5 and 7 and played on the “featured table” against a team that was one player from the team that won the first year and one player from the team that won the second year. They even went to overtime with them! A few of our other friends’ teams did well, but obviously none of us won the whole thing or that would have been the headline to this whole post.

A lot of us stuck around for the final day and I sadly watched as the team that had beaten us on the first day got all the way to the semi-final game before getting knocked out in triple overtime! I still can’t believe how good that guy is (he’s in the tie-dye Jamaica shirt in the pictures below). The final game came with dimmed lights and running out to music like cage fighters. And then there was Bruce:

A team called Smashing Time ended up winning the whole thing. They had placed in the top 10 the past two years and were really good. After the whole thing ended Caleb and I went gambling and a lot of people played beer pong in their rooms (still confused as to why they hadn’t bored of beer pong yet) and then went to a casino to play cash beer pong games. I showed up and ended up playing 13 cash games, with 8 different partners, all of whom were drunk, and winning 11 of them. Apparently, all I need to do to win beer pong is get hammered and cocky. Noted. Everyone who was there had a great time and anyone thinking of coming in the future definitely should. It’s an awesome time. Until next year and my secret plans… Team China: WSOBP 2010.

*Update: Our friends Aarde and Nisse, The Emoticons, got interviewed over here in the video on that page. They make last cup at the 0:17 mark and get a 30 second interview at the 1:41 mark. Check it out!
