English Wine

By the 1700s, gin shops comprised over half of the drinking establishments in England. This drink looks like runoff sewer water that has been sitting in those pipes since then. The surprising thing is that instead of tasting like that sewage, it actually tastes like a sweet, fruity, strong beer.

I decided to check out the local beer pong scene in my temporary hometown and use it as the site for the first “New Drink” post. It’s held in a restaurant/bar called Cowboy Cantina that shuts down after normal hours and sets up beer pong tables that are way too long in my opinion. Obviously, we still played though. Who passes up beer pong? Two of my friends played first and were happy to only lose by 9 cups, one cup away from running around the entire bar naked.

A few drinks and some swaying to silent music later, I finally ordered two of the amazing English Wine shots. My friend Eric took one of the inaugural shots with me. He also took a picture with me and for some reason looks like Don Vito 50 shots deep, even though he was fairly sober by then (drunk time was soon after).

English Wine reminds me of a wine cooler with Guinness poured in it. Initially, it sounds disgusting. Really it just tastes like sweet beer. The gin adds a little bite, but it’s mostly covered up by the beer taste. I don’t think I would ever pick this drink if I had a choice because there are better choices for almost any type of drink. However, I wouldn’t mind taking this over a lot of “dare drinks.”
