Chemical-X

We continued our weekend of chain restaurant bars and swingers dive bars by heading up to Santa Barbara to visit my brother for the night. The subject of our blog came up which led to him telling us he had invented a shot just recently at one of his local bars. Story goes that he and some buddies wanted to come up with a dare shot and the bartender convinced my brother and three of his friends to each write down an ingredient on a piece of paper. Two of them were to pick some straight liquor, one pick a liqueur, and one a mixer. Amazingly, this idea is essentially what our blog was based upon, which gives us hope that all you kids out there are searching for great dare shots just like we are. Their ingredients ended up being tequila, scotch, melon liqueur, and Rockstar. The shot was given the name Chemical-X, due to its bright green glow and potential toxic side effects. Upon hearing this news, we all agreed this was a perfect opportunity for us to test the downtown Santa Barbara bar scene with this shot.
This night obviously turned into a drunken good time, because whenever Cory, my brother and I do anything together, it’s a constant stream of us one-upping and making fun of each other. Our first bar downtown was a small place with a dance floor and a go-go dancer, which was interesting because it was an Irish pub. Of course we couldn’t just grab a beer there—we had to jump straight into Jameson shots. We then moved on to another super-trendy bar where my brother seemed to know every person, which led to free tall cans of beer and very well poured double vodka-tonics. A few places and many more drinks later, we decided to unleash Chemical-X at some three story trendy sushi place turned night club. We proceeded to the top floor, where we had a bartender all to ourselves, and let my brother get our long anticipated shot in order.
Well, as intimidating as mixing tequila and scotch is, this ended up being far from a dare shot. I would classify it as a party shot—one that girls would line up to drink due to its sweet flavor. To be fair, the bar we tried it at poured their watermelon liqueur—which is red—instead of a melon liqueur—which is green. Thus, we did not get to experience this shot’s green glow. We were a little too blitzed by this point to even care that we completely butchered the shot. I would assume using a normal melon liqueur would be nearly as sweet anyways. That mistake didn’t stop us from ordering three more rounds of the shot, however, and the night led to numerous more charges to my credit card that I am still not to thrilled about.
Cory say: “Melon Liqueur Make Expensive Alcohols Taste Like Cheap Date”
I remember very little of Santa Barbara. I know that most of the group we were supposed to go with bailed on account of multiple vaginas hurting. We even went to the apartment of said vaginas and hung out while Josh’s brother got his girlfriend to get ready and join us. Meanwhile, I found a pamphlet that I kid you not promoted psychoactive drugs and was put out by some association within the University of Santa Barbara. It was supposed to come off as a “this university is cool” pamphlet, much like the actually useful pamphlets that explain condom use by suggesting that sex isn’t that bad of a thing. Only this one was like a mail order catalog for club drugs.
We ended up downtown and went to a couple of bars. Notably one had semi-cool posters of celebrities spray painted on them. The last bar that we ended up dong the shot at was amazing inside. The top floor looked like a saloon pool hall that rich landowners in the 1800s would have hung out in. Anyways, the shot was decent. I don’t think it is really all that memorable. It tastes decent and packs a standard amount of alcohol. Overall, meh. You could add it to your stock of drinks to order if you want, but it’s not a stand out by any means, negative or positive.
