Beer Pong with 151 Land Mines

postImageWe all know the game of beer pong.  If you have been to party any time within the last couple of years, you are bound to have played.  Many types of rules go, which all essentially have the goal of making people drink quickly.  In the spirit of our 151 Days Of Christmas, and as an excuse for me not taking any 151 shots while I have been sick these last two weeks, I am introducing a new variation of drinking involving the game of beer pong.  Try including ‘land mines’ in your game.  By this I mean you should fill one of the 6 or 10 cups on each side with a shot of Bacardi 151–or any other hard stuff.  Of course, to make this work, you will have to fill the cup with a healthy pour of alcohol to keep your cup from falling over during play.  It usually ends up being about a double shot.  Another option to keep the cup from falling over is to fill a shot in a shot glass, and place the actual shot glass in the cup.  The only issue with this is that the ping pong ball will find a way to bounce off the shot glass and out of the cup, leading to an argument as to whether the shot was good or not.  I recommend just filling up a clean cup with the hard alcohol itself.  The way we usually set up land mines in a game of beer pong is to have each team fill up a cup of their choice, on their own side, with an agreed upon alcohol.  As this team does this, the other team has to look away, so they do not know which cup in the rack is the land mine.  Then the other team does the same, with the opposite team looking away, and the game begins as normal.  If you are playing the game in normal party mode, with two people on each side, teammates must take turns drinking cups, so when the land mine is made, there is no dispute as to which teammate has to take the shot.  If it is your turn to drink, you take the shot.  It’s as simple as that.  In the case that the game finishes with the losing team never making the other team’s land mine, the losing team ends up taking that shot.  Preferably the shot taker in this instance will be the person who didn’t have to take their own shot during the game in the process of losing.

The land mine idea came up in my third year of college from my roommate Steve.  We had the perfect place for beer pong nights that year.  It was a crappy town house with all tile floors downstairs and a two car garage.  This allowed us to get out of hand, make a mess, and not worry about spills, because the place was already a dump and nothing would stain.  We would take an old outdoor table and put an old slider door from upstairs that had been stashed in the garage over the table as our beer pong table.  It was the perfect length, right around nine feet, just like a ping pong table.  Also, one of the best features of our place that year was the fact that it was always stocked with a bottle of Bacardi 151.  During one of the beer pong nights we hosted, Steve insisited on pouring 151 in his cups so he could speed the night of drinking up.  We ended up going with it and had one or two land mines of 151 on each side.  Eventually, we added more rules to the picture, like the alternating drinkers to randomize who would take the shot and avoid arguments about it, and making it so the other team didn’t know which cup was the land mine so they couldn’t aim for one cup all game in order to avoid taking the shot if they lost without hitting that cup.

Thus, I recommend next time you and some friends host or even show up at a party with beer pong, bring the strongest bottle of booze over to the table and initiate some land mines in the game.  It will be well worth the effort and loads of good drunken times. In fact, the AFOV crew will absolutely be adding 151 land mines to our games this winter break in preparation for the World Series Of Beer Pong coming up in Vegas in January.
